Node.js Mentorship is a program that connects people who want to learn with experienced members of the Node.js community. Its goal is to help newcomers contribute to the Node.js project by pairing them with mentors who can guide them through real work on the codebase and its various initiatives. The program works through a structured matchmaking process. Teams within the Node.js ecosystem that need extra help can apply to host a mentee. The mentorship team then gathers requirements, publishes an opportunity, collects applications, and filters candidates down to a short list. The hosting team picks someone from that list, and the mentee begins attending meetings and working on tasks. Mentors provide guidance, feedback, and context, with the hope that mentees eventually become full contributors, and potentially mentors themselves. This is designed for two audiences. First, developers who want to break into open source but aren't sure where to start, a mentee gets direct access to insiders and meaningful work rather than wandering into a project cold. Second, existing Node.js working groups that have important work but not enough people to do it. The program essentially supplies vetted, motivated contributors to teams that need them, while handling the upfront recruiting and screening. The commitment is real but flexible. Mentees are expected to be self-motivated and proactive, with a minimum of about one hour per week, though more may be needed depending on the group's meeting cadence. Mentors provide knowledge and support but expect mentees to identify areas of need and push work forward. The program checks in after a month to make sure the relationship is working. The repository itself serves as the program's hub, it hosts the application process, onboarding documentation, records of previous opportunities, and announcements. New opportunities are posted as they become available, and anyone interested can follow along through the repo or the OpenJS Foundation Slack workspace.
