Optional Groq API key needed for faster cloud transcription, local mode needs a Whisper model download first.
Auto-Subtitle Generator is a free Windows desktop app that automatically creates subtitles for your videos using AI speech recognition. You load a video file, and the app transcribes the spoken words into text, lining each word up with the exact moment it is spoken, so the captions match the audio precisely. There are two ways to transcribe. You can run OpenAI's Whisper model entirely on your own computer, which keeps everything private and works without an internet connection once the model is downloaded. Or you can use the Groq cloud service with your own free API key, which is much faster, especially for long videos, but sends the audio to Groq's servers to be processed. The app can also detect which language is being spoken from over 20 supported languages and translate the result into English subtitles with one click. Once the transcript is ready, you can style the captions using ready made presets similar to popular short form video looks, such as bold captions or word by word karaoke style highlighting, or you can fully customize the font, size, color, outline, and position yourself. A timeline view lets you drag to adjust the timing of individual words or lines, preview how the captions will look on the video in real time, and fix any misspelled words directly. When you are finished, you can export a finished video with the subtitles burned permanently into the frame, or save standard subtitle files in SRT or VTT format for use in other video editors such as Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. The app runs on Windows 10 or 11, needs about 200 megabytes of disk space for the app itself, and an additional 75 megabytes to 3 gigabytes depending on which local Whisper model you choose to download. A Groq API key is optional but recommended if you want faster cloud based transcription. The project is free to use, and the developer accepts optional donations to support continued work on it.
