Requires getting your own free Gemini API key from Google to send messages.
PersonaChat is an Android app for chatting with custom AI characters, built to run fully on your phone with no account, no subscription, and no server storing your conversations. Everything you type and every character you build stays local to your device. It uses a bring your own key model, meaning you connect it to your own Gemini API key from Google rather than paying the app's developer for access. The app lets you create an unlimited number of characters or personas to chat with, and includes several small quality of life features: labeling your roleplay chats, changing chat colors, rewinding or editing messages, pinning important messages, archiving old chats, and customizing the app's fonts and color scheme. You can write custom instructions for a character, similar to what other roleplay chat apps call a lorebook, and you can fully delete chats or import and export your data so you do not lose anything if you switch phones. Because there is no server component, there is also no shared feed or discovery of other people's characters. The only characters that exist in your copy of the app are the ones you build yourself. The README explains this is a deliberate choice to avoid running paid servers and to keep the app free of subscriptions. The README's FAQ section notes that if you have not paid for Gemini API credits, the free Gemma model tier still allows unlimited messages, while other models are meant for users willing to pay for their own usage. It also confirms there are no current plans to support iOS or iPadOS, since that would require a Mac and additional cost the developer does not have.
