This repo is a write-up of the author's desktop rice, which is the community term for a heavily customized Linux desktop. It is not a working dotfiles repository yet. The README is explicit that the author has not extracted their dotfiles into the repo, only a .zip file and a written overview, with a promise to add a proper in-depth guide later. It is described as the author's first tutorial of this kind. The base system is CachyOS, an Arch-based distribution, running the KDE Plasma desktop environment. The look is built around a black and white monochrome theme. The starting point is the Monochrome KDE global theme by pwyde, with the matching SDDM login screen, plus a monochrome icon set by dirn, Bibata-Modern-Ice cursors, the dotLock boot splash, and a Kuro the cat splash screen. Application, Plasma, and window decoration styles are kept as the default Breeze. The panel uses several Plasma widgets. CatWalkR places a small cat in the top-right panel, KDE control station provides a menu, Kurve runs as an audio visualizer on the left, and YoRHa HUD plus Thermal Monitor sit on the right for system monitoring. Panel Colorizer is used with two panels (top and bottom) configured into islands using preset folders that the author tells you to copy into ~/.config/panel-colorizer/presets/. A default System Monitor widget sits at the top left and a digital clock on the desktop itself. The system font is JetBrainsMono Nerd Font set globally, the shell is fish (with a plan to move to zsh), and the terminal is cool-retro-term, with the author's exported JSON config attached for import. The browser is Zen, customized for a transparent background by following an external guide and pairing it with the kwin-effects-forceblur KWin effect, plus a list of Firefox extensions (Bonjourr, Dark Reader, Zen Internet) and Zen mods like Animations Plus, Better Find Bar, and Transparent Zen. The README ends with a list of work-in-progress items: ricing Vivaldi, Vencord, and vim, converting all app icons to monochrome, finishing the SDDM login screen and a video-based lock screen, and a custom fastfetch. Two wallpaper links from desktophut.com are included. The repo is presented as a living document that will grow as the setup changes.
